My landlord took me to court over $4,800 in unpaid rent.
When the judge asked why I hadn't paid, I told the truth.
Me: “Because my apartment had no heat for almost three months.”
The landlord immediately interrupted.
Landlord: “That's completely false.”
Judge: “Mr. Harris, I'll decide what's false. You can respond when you're asked.”
The landlord went quiet.
Judge: “Do you have proof that the tenant failed to pay rent?”
Landlord: “Yes, Your Honor.”
He handed over the payment ledger.
The judge looked at it.
Then looked at me.
Judge: “You stopped paying in January?”
Me: “Yes.”
Judge: “Why?”
Me: “Because I had already reported the heating problem three times.”
The landlord shook his head.
Then the judge asked one question that changed the entire hearing.
