Samuel is hacking a man to pieces in front of the altar.

Sword swinging. Blood spraying. Agag screaming, then not screaming.

The old prophet—the gentle voice of God for forty years, is butchering a king with his own hands.

Because Saul wouldn't.

Agag thought he was safe. Cut a deal with King Saul. Walked out that morning thinking: "Surely the bitterness of death is past."

Wrong.

Samuel said: "As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women."

Then hacked him apart. In front of God. In front of everyone.

The blood gets under your fingernails. Stains your robes. You can taste the iron in the air.

Here's what nobody tells you about obedience:

Sometimes the prophet has to finish what the anointed king refused to do.

Rewind twelve hours.

Samuel's been up all night. Face in the dirt. Wrestling with God until dawn.

The text says he "cried unto the LORD all night."

Why?

Because God just told him something that wrecked him:

"I repent that I have made Saul king."

Not "I'm disappointed." Not "I'm reconsidering."

God repented.

The Hebrew is nacham—to feel sorrow, to grieve, to change course.

God looked at His choice and said: I regret this.

Let that land.

Your systematic theology says God is immutable.

Unchanging. Incapable of regret.

Your Bible says: "And the LORD repented that He had made Saul king over Israel." —1 Samuel 15:35 (KJV)

So which one's wrong?

Your theology, or your text?

Because you can't have both.

Either God is safe and predictable and distant like a computer program executing code.

Or God is alive and responsive and capable of grief when His kings rebel.

Choose.

Here's what led to this moment.

God gave Saul one job: Destroy the Amalekites.

Everything. Everyone. No mercy.

The Amalekites attacked Israel when they were weakest, starving in the desert, fresh out of Egypt, vulnerable.

God's memory is long. And terrifying.

"I remember what Amalek did."

So Saul goes to war. Slaughters the army. Wins decisively.

But keeps King Agag alive. Keeps the best sheep and cattle. Brings them back as trophies.

Partial obedience.

The kind that looks like success but smells like rebellion.

Samuel shows up the next morning.

Saul's celebrating. "Blessed be thou of the LORD! I have performed the commandment of the LORD!"

Samuel hears sheep bleating.

"Then what's that sound in my ears?"

Saul spirals:

"The PEOPLE brought them... to sacrifice to the LORD thy God."

Notice that. "Thy God." Not mine. Creating distance already.

Samuel cuts through it:

"To obey is better than sacrifice. Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft."

Your partial obedience? Your religious-looking disobedience?

God calls it witchcraft.

Not spells and potions. Control. Doing what you want while using God's name to justify it.

Then the kill shot:

"Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, He hath also rejected thee from being king."

Saul grabs Samuel's robe. Desperate.

The robe tears.

Samuel says: "The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day."

The torn robe = the torn kingdom. Physical prophecy.

Saul begs: "I have sinned... honor me now before the elders."

Even his repentance is about image. About reputation.

Not about God.

And it's too late.

That's when Samuel demands Agag.

And hacks him to pieces.

Because somebody had to finish what the anointed king refused to do.

Blood everywhere. On the altar. On Samuel's hands. On his robes.

The prophet became the executioner.

After that, Samuel goes home. Never sees Saul again. Not once. For the rest of Saul's life.

"And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul."

Mourned him like he was dead. While he was still alive.

And the text says:

"And the LORD repented that He had made Saul king over Israel."

God joined Samuel in the mourning.

Here's what this reveals that your theology can't handle:

God's love is real. Not theoretical. Not distant.

Real enough to feel regret.

Real enough to grieve.

Real enough to change course when the relationship breaks.

This isn't about God making mistakes.

This is about God being in REAL relationship. Covenant relationship. The kind that risks. The kind that hopes. The kind that feels the weight when it breaks.

He knew Saul would fail. But He chose him anyway. Invested anyway. Anointed anyway.

That's what covenant love does.

It enters into partnership knowing the other person has the power to break your heart.

And when they do?

You feel it.

God felt it.

The Creator of the universe stood over Saul's rebellion and said: This hurts.

That's not weakness.

That's the kind of love that bleeds.

Modern Christianity wants a God who's above emotion. Above pain. Above regret.

We want a God who executes His predetermined plan with computer precision.

But the God of Scripture gets His hands dirty. Forms man from dust. Walks in gardens. Wrestles prophets all night. Repents when His kings fail. Weeps over Jerusalem. Bleeds on a cross.

Our God is not safe.

He's near. He's invested. He's vulnerable to the people He chooses.

And when they fail Him—when WE fail Him—He doesn't just move to Plan B.

He grieves.

That should terrify you more than the idea of a distant God.

Because it means your obedience matters.

Your rebellion costs Him something.

Your partial obedience—the kind that looks religious but smells like witchcraft—it doesn't just violate rules.

It breaks a heart.

Saul thought he could negotiate. Keep the trophies and the religious performance and still keep the anointing.

The Spirit left him. And never came back.

And God mourned the king that could have been.

What partial obedience are you clutching?

What religious, looking compromise are you calling faithfulness?

Where are you keeping the best sheep for "sacrifice" instead of just doing what God said?

God's not impressed with your religious performance.
He's not moved by your sacrifices when you're holding back obedience.

He's grieved.

The God who repented over Saul is looking at your half-hearted discipleship.

And He's feeling the weight of what you could have been. The anointing you're squandering. The kingdom work you're trading for sheep.

Saul lost everything over "good" reasons.

Kept the king for a trophy. Kept the best animals for sacrifice. Kept his reputation intact.

All religious-sounding. All rebellion.

Samuel hacked Agag to pieces because somebody had to finish what the king refused to do.

The blood was on Samuel's hands because it should have been on Saul's.

And God repented.

Not because He was wrong about Saul.

Because Saul was wrong about God.

Religion says: Follow the rules and God will be pleased.
Scripture says: Obey with your whole heart or lose the anointing.

Saul followed rules. Won the battle. Brought back trophies. Planned sacrifices.

And lost the kingdom.

Because God doesn't want your performance.
He wants your heart.

And He can tell the difference.

What are you keeping that God told you to kill?

What Agag are you negotiating with instead of executing?

The God who repents is the God who grieves over what you're becoming.

Not because He didn't know you'd fail.

Because He loves you enough to feel it when you do.
That's not weakness. That's covenant.

That's the kind of love that will tear kingdoms away from kings who refuse to obey.

Religion says stay comfortable.

Covenant says get bloody.

Saul chose religion. Samuel chose covenant.
