3 Days of Starvation on the Balcony: When Pets Become Victims of Irresponsibility 💔

I just finished watching a video about a husky locked on a high-floor balcony for three full days without food or water. The desperate cries for help still echo in my mind. It’s not only because of the suffering of an innocent creature, but because of the shocking coldness of those who once claimed to be its “owners.”

The story is quite simple, yet enough to send chills down many spines. A neighbor heard continuous barking coming from the balcony above. He thought the owners would return by evening. But three days passed, and the husky remained trapped there, growing weaker from hunger and thirst. The man called the police and asked nearby neighbors to provide some food and water just to keep it alive. When the police contacted the owners, they replied coldly that they were still on vacation and promised to send someone… and indeed, someone only showed up the next day. A few days later, the local animal protection team officially rescued the dog and took it to a safer place.

What troubles me most is not that the husky was eventually saved in time. It is the fact that some people are willing to spend money on a vacation, yet unwilling to spend a few minutes arranging care for the animal they chose to adopt. They treat the dog like a decoration, a living accessory to show off to friends, rather than a living being with emotions and the most basic needs: to eat, to drink, and to be cared for.

I have raised dogs for many years. I know exactly the feeling of looking into their eyes. They don’t ask for much — just your presence, just the knowledge that you remember they depend completely on you. When you leave, they don’t understand the concept of a “vacation.” They only know they have been abandoned. Three days may feel like a short holiday to a human, but to a dog trapped on an empty balcony, it is an entire world collapsing: hunger, thirst, fear, and despair.

This incident does not merely reflect individual irresponsibility. It raises a larger question about how we treat animals in modern society. Many people buy pets because they are “cute” or “trendy,” forgetting that raising a living being is a long-term commitment, not a temporary hobby. If you have money for a vacation but cannot ensure a safe place or temporary caregiver for your dog, do you truly deserve to be called an owner?

Fortunately, there are still neighbors who listen to the cries for help. They took action. They proved that compassion still exists. But we cannot rely on such luck forever. The law needs to be stricter against cases of animal abuse and abandonment. Society also needs to recognize more clearly: pets are not toys, not decorations.

I am not writing these lines to condemn one specific family. I write because I believe every one of us has a responsibility. If you are currently raising a pet, ask yourself: When you go away, how will they be cared for? If you are not ready to take full responsibility, do not adopt.
