SGT Plutino was from Pitman, NJ. He was 28 when he died in Afghanistan on Aug. 8, 2011 while serving in the U.S. Army with Company B, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, GA.

This is also one of my favorite things about working in government: encountering people who are 1) passionate about their portfolio, 2) good at their job, and 3) in a moment where their work is REALLY important. It's wonk nirvana.

I remember where I was when I learned that Madeleine Albright would be the first woman Secretary of State -- it was that kind of a milestone.
She was a tiny giant to a generation of women in national security, and we saw ourselves in her.
