CEYLIN ERGUVAN IN PORTUGUESE
Aired on HBO Max in Brazil with 2 seasons, #Yargı features Beatriz Rodrigues as the voice of Ceylin. Beatriz has been working in dubbing since 2015 and has lent her voice to other Turkish series as well.
Ceylin was renamed ‘Celina’, and all the other characters also had their names adapted to more familiar Brazilian names.
NAME ADAPTATION
“The decision to adapt the names was made with the Brazilian audience in mind. We’ve been doing this since the time of Mexican telenovelas, changing names that aren’t common in our culture, especially those that might have a double meaning or sound strange in Portuguese.
At one point, we wondered: “Should we change only a few names?” But we felt that would lead to inconsistency, so we chose to adapt all of them. It’s quite a demanding process, but it helps everything make more sense to the local audience.”
THE PROCESS
“I’ve been dubbing Ceylin since 2023. Yargı was one of the first Turkish dizis I ever watched, and right away I saw its potential to win international awards. As part of the process, I watched the first ten episodes to try to understand the character and what she would go through.
While recording those episodes, I was hoarse most of the time because of the emotional intensity. So if you watch closely, you’ll notice my voice gradually fading as the drama intensifies. I had to record 12 episodes every week. It was an extremely tough three months.”
THE HARDEST SCENE
“For me were the ones involving her sister’s death, especially the moment when she finds out it was her friend who killed her. I remember asking to step out of the studio a few times because it was just too emotionally overwhelming.
Just as difficult was Ilgaz’s death. It triggered crying episodes so intense that I couldn’t record anything else afterward.”
SPOILER ALERT?
“Some spoilers were inevitable. I caught the entire third season while it was airing, and since I follow a few people who love Turkish dizis, it was spoiler after spoiler. That already has me thinking about how challenging it’s going to be to record season 3.
I have a feeling that everything Ceylin goes through in this next season will be even more emotionally intense.”
