π΄π²π± The fighting in Tin-Zaouatine is still ongoing.
The first video shows a moment from one of the clashes (the footage was taken from the Algerian side, and the fence marks the border). The second video shows the city, which is shrouded in smoke from numerous fires.
The fourth video shows the flag of the FLA separatist group, flying against the backdrop of burning targets.
Tin-Zaouatine in Mali became known due to a major and intense battle in July 2024, when a column of the Malian army and Wagner mercenaries was ambushed by Tuareg separatists and Islamist groups.
The advance of the column northward (including the capture of Kidal and the fighting near Tin-Zaouatine) had a direct goal: to cut off the militants from gold resources and bring them under control.
The area around Tin-Zaouatine is actively involved in gold mining, and this economic factor is one of the main reasons for the fierce fighting in this region.
Unlike southern Mali, where gold is mined by large international corporations, the Tin-Zaouatine area has a developed artisanal and illegal mining industry (known as "gold panning"). Tens of thousands of gold panners and migrants from neighboring Sahel countries (Sudan, Chad, Niger) are employed at numerous border mines.
These gold mines are currently controlled by Tuareg separatists (FLA) and Islamist groups. They impose taxes and fees on the gold panners, which serves as the main source of funding for the purchase of weapons, equipment, and the payment of salaries to militants.
