"My Uncle Wes just died and I want to tell you something about him.

I met my Uncle in 5th grade (1968) during Vietnam. My Dad was stationed on Pendleton and at the time the Marine Corps had a program where stateside Marines hosted Marines coming back from Vietnam who was convalescing here. My Uncle came back from Kke Sanh, he had shell fragments and bullet holes in his back and arms and as a child, I had never seen anything like that.

My parents introduced him to my mom's sister and soon after they were married. Uncle Wes did three tours and several purple hearts which he had framed in his house. He used to tell me stories of his time in Nam, which I can't even repeat here. He kept his buddy’s Zippo who didn't make it back from there for years. He and my Dad inspired me to join the Marines.

Uncle Wes Petersen, I know you are now guarding the streets of heaven and I miss you dearly. Semper Fi."

Petty Officer 3rd Class Lauren J. Singer was traveling over the Coronado Bridge near San Diego, California, when she noticed a stranded motorist outside his vehicle.

Singer asked if he needed any help, and the driver responded that he was fine. She noticed the driver putting a rope around his neck. As he was putting a foot on the barrier to jump over the edge, Singer rushed to his side, pulling him back. Startled, she grabbed him and asked what he was doing. He coolly responded by saying that today was the day he was going to die.

While Singer was holding the driver, she noticed a knife on the barrier ledge. She cut the rope from around his neck, dropped the knife and kicked it underneath the car. She then identified a gun in his pocket. She removed the firearm and directed other stopped motorists to lock the gun securely in the trunk and call 911.

She stayed with the suicidal driver until the California Highway Patrol arrived. Singer’s willingness to assist a stranger undoubtedly resulted in saving his life.

Singer, an aviation machinist’s mate, serves with the U.S. Navy’s Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron out of Naval Air Station North Island, California. For her actions, Singer was selected as the USO Sailor of the year 2020.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of recently retired APD K9 Zar, who died on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the age of 13. Zar joined the Asheville Police Department in 2015 and served for 10 years alongside his handler, Sgt. Spencer Brunkhorst. Highly trained in narcotics detection, tracking, article searches, and apprehension, Zar played a key role in locating numerous wanted persons, narcotics, and weapons.
Thank you for your loyal and dedicated service, Zar. You will always be remembered.
