Inside Erik Prince’s USD 100 million mission to secure DRC mines, fight M23

✍🏼UVIRA — Erik Prince, the American private-security entrepreneur and founder of Blackwater which changed its name to Xe Services in 2009 and Academi in 2011 before merging into Constellis Group in 2014, has moved to eastern DRC’s battlefield as President Félix Tshisekedi’s regime seeks to reverse its military losses to AFC/M23 rebels.

✍🏼Erik arrived in Bujumbura, Burundi, from Kinshasa on August 15, accompanied by four personnel, according to concordant sources who spoke to The Great Lakes Eye. In the Burundian business capital, he met Burundi’s army chief Gen Prime Niyongabo at his office. On August 16, Erik and Niyongabo crossed into eastern DRC through the Gatumba-Kavimvira border and proceeded to Uvira town in the South Kivu Province’s territory with the same name, the sources said.

✍🏼The trip followed a secret security meeting in Kinshasa involving Erik, Tshisekedi, and senior Congolese and Burundian officials. At the center of those discussions, sources say, was a USD 100 million offer from Tshisekedi to Erik to secure strategic mining sites in eastern DRC and help retake territory controlled by AFC/M23. Erik travelled to Uvira to assess the battlefield directly and determine how private military personnel could be deployed.

The DRC Is About to Become One of the World's Largest Lithium Producers. The Manono Project Is Not a Development Story. It Is a Control Story.

Manono could produce about 130,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent annually, potentially close to 5% of global supply by 2028.

But the bigger question is not how much lithium the DRC will produce. It is who controls the project, who controls the processing, and how much of the value stays in the country.

Zijin holds the dominant position. The DRC retains equity, but equity does not automatically mean control over capital, technology, processing or access to markets. Meanwhile, the dispute involving AVZ Minerals and interest from KoBold Metals show just how strategically important Manono has become.

Selon nos sources, le gouvernement congolais souhaiterait accélérer le développement du gisement de lithium de Manono, tout en évitant que les contentieux juridiques autour de #Dathcom Mining ne retardent davantage le projet.

À Kinshasa, l'objectif serait de voir #KoBold Metals et $AVZ/Dathcom concrétiser leur dialogue, notamment autour d'une possible acquisition par KoBold d'une partie des intérêts liés au gisement.
Afin de permettre la mise en pratique de l'accord sur les minerais entre les USA et la RDC.

Une telle solution permettrait à la RDC de sécuriser le développement de Manono, tout en recherchant une issue négociée au différend avec #AVZ et en réduisant le risque de nouveaux conflits judiciaires.

L'enjeu est stratégique : transformer Manono en projet minier opérationnel, sans laisser les batailles juridiques continuer à bloquer l'exploitation d'une des ressources de lithium les plus importantes du pays.

Per Bloomberg, some companies are still determining whether they will attend in person and if so, which executives to send, according to the people familiar. Trump is set to be joined by leaders of his National Energy Dominance Council, including Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, executive director Jarrod Agen, as well as White House adviser David Copley.

The event is designed to showcase efforts to help spur critical minerals development and processing, with plans to unveil a handful of a deals and memoranda of understanding, according to people familiar with the summit, who requested anonymity to provide details ahead of a formal announcement.

The event has been in the works for weeks, though there’s been a rush to pull together final details in recent days, with a range of US government agencies tapped to participate, some of the people said.

Specifics on potential deals were not immediately available Thursday. Ahead of the session, White House officials asked government agencies to detail recently closed deals and MOUs that would help demonstrate momentum on the president’s critical minerals agenda, some of the people said.

A White House official said the administration is putting together a historic meeting of mining industry officials as the president advances measures to support critical mineral development.

While the documentation is copy of what looks like an official document, it reveals that #Kobold is actively attempting to bypass our $AVZ licensing agreement. They apparently have the backing of the State Department’s Secretary for African Affairs, who seems indifferent to international courts and the rule of law, despite our ongoing ICC and ICSID litigation.

Katabuka and Kobold’s in-house counsel, Sandy, are pursuing the asset through DRC contacts without regard for our legal position. However, sources indicate the Minister of Justice @JusticeGouvCD dismissed Kobold from a second meeting, expressing frustration over their disregard for the rule of law and argues for an amicable resolution to the issue for all stakeholders 🙏
