In the past months I've been on a mission to make Pakistan's public data more useable through building open source databases and visualisations.
Today I'm launching Adaad (اعداد), a monthly data journal on Pakistan. Adaad is where those datasets become arguments and insights.
Everything here is made to be taken. The prose, the charts and the cleaned datasets are published under a Creative Commons licence (CC BY 4.0). Translate a piece for an Urdu newspaper. Rebuild a chart for a classroom. Rerun the analysis and publish your disagreement. All we ask is a line of credit and a link to the source.
Adaad also publishes contributors. If you have a question the data can answer — or data that raises a question — pitch it to [email protected]. For more details on what is required for a pitch, please see the about section.
Happy Independence Day — the struggle continues!

My dad’s @facebook account of 20 years was hacked and he’s completely locked out. The recovery process fails of course because the hackers just change the email and phone number.
They’re posting very real looking AI generated photos of my dad and his wife, claiming they bought a yacht and a big house thanks to a crypto investment. The posts encourage people to send a DM and learn how to invest. It’s really sad because I know some of his friends are going to think this is real and send money to the scammers. Anyone who comments to warn people just gets blocked and they delete the comment.
It’s insane how little @Meta helps. We’ve had dozens of people reporting the account as hacked every day, and it’s still posting away without so much as a temporary suspension. He would happily pay for premium support (which today just means speaking to a human) but they offer no customer support at all. I don’t understand how these companies that are so critical to people’s lives and businesses can’t figure out how to offer support. Just make people pay a small fee when it’s urgent to cover the cost.
The tragic part is that he had 2FA activated, but I think he was taken to a spoofed version of Facebook where he completed the login process and entered the 2FA code thinking that he was just logging into Facebook. The only silver lining is that scammers and AI may soon ruin the internet and make us more of an offline society again. We could probably all use some grass touching

Murtaza Solangi. This guy sat around giving lectures on human rights, and constantly crying over Bhutto. Actually, that computes. Anyone who defends Bhutto’s reign can only be a thug.
We may have just witnessed the largest temperature contrast ever recorded for a single country. There was a staggering 90.3°C difference between today’s lowest minimum and highest maximum temperatures in China.
