The Lagos-based company reported a 23.6% non-paternity rate, down slightly from 24% in 2024/25 and 26.1% in 2023.

However, Smart DNA cautioned that the figures do not mean one in four Nigerian children has a different biological father, noting that its clients are not a random sample of the population.

Nearly one in four paternity tests conducted by a leading Nigerian DNA testing company returned negative results in 2025/2026, although the firm has stressed that the figure should not be taken as representative of the wider Nigerian population.

Smart DNA Nigeria, a Lagos-based DNA testing company, reported that 23.6% of the paternity tests it conducted during the latest reporting period found that the tested man was not the biological father. The figure represents a slight decline from 24% the previous year and 26.1% in 2023, according to the company's annual DNA testing report released in August 2026.

However, Smart DNA cautioned against interpreting the results as meaning that nearly one in four Nigerian children has a different biological father. The company said its clients are not a random sample of Nigerian families, as many people seek paternity tests because they already have doubts about a child's biological parentage.

About 87% of the tests were private "peace of mind" tests, rather than tests conducted for court cases or immigration purposes. Men accounted for nearly 79% of inquiries, while almost half of the male clients were aged 41 or older. Around three-quarters of all cases came from Lagos, although demand for DNA testing is growing in other parts of Nigeria.

Smart DNA Marketing Manager Chukwudi Eze also urged people to consider the positive results. He pointed out that roughly three out of every four men tested were confirmed as the biological fathers.

Earlier reports from Smart DNA recorded similarly high exclusion rates, generally ranging between 25% and 27%, with higher discrepancies reported among firstborn children, particularly sons.

The latest figures show a gradual decline in negative paternity results while highlighting the growing use of DNA testing in Nigeria as people seek certainty over biological relationships and family ties.

Our 2026 report is out today. It covers 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026. Three findings are worth your time.

First. The share of negative outcomes did not move, holding at 23.6 per cent against 24.0 per cent the year before. More Nigerians are testing. The result pattern has not changed. Those two facts sit together and they matter more than either does alone.

Second. 87.0 per cent of our classified cases were Peace of Mind tests. Not court orders. Not immigration files. Private decisions taken by people who could not live with a question any longer. DNA testing in Nigeria is a personal wellbeing behaviour long before it is a legal one, and our sector has been slow to say so.

Third, and this is the part I would ask you to carry with you. Our clients are not a random sample of Nigeria. They are people who already had a reason to test. Our negative rate describes our testing population. It cannot be used to estimate how many Nigerian children are not biologically related to the man who believes he is the father. We print that caveat in every edition, and we will keep correcting anyone who removes it, including people quoting us favourably.

It’s funny that NLC went on a strike regarding salary increase in Nigeria. What kind of foolishness is this? There is no need to increase any salary. If anything, it should be reduced. If people get higher wages, life might be better for many poor people which is not something we want and maybe education will get better too, the economy self… but who wants that?

I don’t want Nigerian students to catch up with my students in China.. It’s better they stay at the same level they are now, so in the future, my Chinese students can continue building things for them to buy, that is if they are still alive.

I am very happy with paying Nigerian teachers 30k per month, while senators take over 20 million naira. This is the right way, they should continue to enjoy while everyone else suffer.
