I’m the guy JD Vance sent the “America’s Hitler” text to in 2016. He was my roommate in law school.
Obviously he’s a sellout, but the bigger deal is he’s angry and vindictive. The perfect fit for Trump’s revenge.
JD’s rise is a triumph for angry jerks everywhere.
History was made last week and hopefully it will last - for the first time in more than 100 years, the State of Israel is without a chief rabbi. No Sephardic chief rabbi and no Ashkenazi chief rabbi.
The fact that 99.9% of Israelis and Jews around the world do not even know about this shows how useless this role and inconsequential it has become.
Once upon a time, the chief rabbi had prominence and value but in recent decades the role has sadly turned into a perch for rabbis like the ones who just finished their term - Yitzchak Yosef and David Lau - who did more to polarize and spread acrimony throughout Israel and the Jewish world than unify and bring people together.
The Chief Rabbinate in Israel has long been the opposite of what it was supposed to be. It does not bring people close to Judaism and instead pushes them away. Countless studies have shown how trust in the rabbinate is in decline and how less and less people are using its services.
Why are there not chief rabbis? The answer is simple: the politicians failed to agree on how to appoint them. They couldn't agree on candidates or even on the governing body - a mix of politicians and public figures - that is supposed to elect them. @bezalelsm could not get his followers to agree on an Ashkenazi rabbi & @ariyederi wanted his brother to be the Sephardic rabbi while the Yosef family wanted to continue the dynasty with another member.
Here is a suggestion - now that we don't have chief rabbis, let's keep it that way and see what happens. My guess: Judaism will become more open, more attractive and more interesting.
Something has long been broken with the state’s relationship with Judaism. Instead of striving to open up Judaism to the people and make it accessible, the rabbinate has tightened its grip, politicized religion and made it something that people want to turn away from, and not engage with.
Not having chief rabbis is an opportunity to reset this dynamic. We should seize it.
Last night's debate made me think of Jewish law, and what it has to say about how to deal with lies and liars. My latest for @jdforward:

There's a lot of obfuscation on all sides about what's really going on and what's really at stake in argument over Rafah and the Biden decision to withhold weapons from Israel. A few points to keep in mind:
It’s double vote day for Twitter Allstar voting (seems like an odd way to do things but here we are).
