Dr Manmohan Singh retired from Rajya Sabha yesterday after 33 years. He was always a dignified presence in and out of parliament, never rushed into the well of the house, never raised his voice in anger but always made his point with no theatrics. The scholarly Dr Singh was never a mass politician: couldn’t win the only LS election he contested and perhaps should never have taken a second term in 2009. BUT two generations and counting owe him a huge debt for unleashing the ‘animal spirits’ of the Indian economy and for showing it is possible to retain a core decency in public life through highs and lows. . Today Dev Anand sir would have turned 100.. my favourite memory of him is during Vajpayeeji’s Lahore bus yatra. He took me to his old college in Lahore: as we walked, a large crowd gathered to see him. He smiled and asked them : ‘do you know who I am?’ Yes.. you are Dev Anand, famous film star , they replied. ‘Yes, I am Dev Anand, born in Pakistan, proud citizen of India,’ he shot back. And then showed me a tree under which he claimed he held hands with a girl for the first time. Thank you Dev Saab for the memories and yes, for my caller tune. Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya.. happy birthday 🎂👍#DevAnand
