I had a buddy who used to sell ads for a radio station, and he would always say that he'd get 10-to-20 "no's" before he got a "yes." He had sales quotas to hit, but he couldn't take the no's personally. He just had to move onto the next one in search of a "yes."

Here’s one mistake I see in almost every novel I edit: too much narrative distance, or space between the reader & the characters/events in the story.
