On November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, an American Great Lakes freighter, tragically sank in Lake Superior amid a fierce storm, leading to the loss of all 29 crew members.

Four days later, on November 14, 1975, a U.S. Navy aircraft, using magnetic anomaly detection, located the ship in deep water. Subsequent examination revealed that the vessel had broken into two large pieces.

The exact cause of the sinking is unknown but it’s accepted that extreme weather and sea conditions played a significant role in the disaster.
