After a series of spelling and vocabulary hurdles, Newton bowed out of the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., United States.

His commendable 67th position (out of 247) is the highest ever attained by any Nigerian at the global competition.

Aside from being the first Nigerian male to compete at the event, he also became the first Nigerian ever to reach the quarterfinal stage.

I attended a boarding school and it was the most beautiful experience of my life.
I grew up an only child and it was in boarding school that I learnt how to live in the same space as other people without conflict.
I learnt how to think and how to do things for myself.
I learnt independence. I will be forever grateful to my parents for sending me to @gticng
