The ARC, Easter Seals, WaPo, et al, all those old schoolers who’ve denied services and overall dismissed or covered up the autism epidemic for 25 years are weeping crocodile tears at the mere mention of the DIRE NEED for a new kind of safe, caring, appropriate housing model for our loved ones. Save Olmstead!!! Community is best!!!! No segregation!!!!

OK. Effective September 1, we will close every Memory Care community in the country. Guess what aging, financially strapped, midlife crisis “it’s my turn” kids? GRANDMA’S COMING HOME!!! We’re sure you can continue to work, care for your kids, plan for your retirement and keep her happily housed and safe from sunrise to sundowning. It’s s snap! After all, that private equity owned community with the $19 an hour staff is, in fact, a segregated institutional living facility hiding under the names “Assisted living” and “Memory Care.” And we can’t have that.

Lots of panic over Olmstead and housing. WHAT HOUSING???? My comment on numerous sites: Here’s a truth few realize unless you live it. Autism is the adult disability of today and tomorrow. Not Down Syndrome, not CP. Autism. And that means behaviors. That no one wants to deal with. The autism on TV and “sanctioned” by self advocates is nothing like daily reality. There IS NO WHERE for autistic men and women with behaviors to live except home. Group homes and day programs turn them away. Parents are shouldering the 24/7 care & expense. And when we die? A flood of autistic 30, 40 year olds with no where to go. Group homes are collapsing – upkeep and taxes. They often can’t live in community settings like apartments because they are loud, sleep is an issue, stomping around. I have three gorgeous adult daughters with autism who need full time care. A condo is impossible – shared walls. So? Why not something like memory care – yes even congregate – tailored to their needs, likes, safety. There’s an industry waiting to serve this population. Lets find a way to create safe well staffed housing that’s NOT Willowbrook. That’s not the creepy Fairfield Hills insane asylum campus in Newtown 12 miles from me. But would allow parents to have hope for the future. We send our typical kids to college campuses, don’t we? Talk to us. We live it.

I wrote about what happens here in funded, bluer than blue Connecticut where the State turned all care to private companies and non-profits many years ago. There IS no housing. Emergency or well thought out.

Last month my daughters had a reservation for their quarterly visit to the state run Respite House. They go for two nights, 2-3 times a year. That’s my respite. You can do the math on two hands. I got a call cancelling their date a week before.

“We have an emergency placement.”

My disappointment disappeared in a heartbeat. An emergency placement means a DDS client has no where to go. Because?

On Tuesday, I was grocery shopping and saw the Respite House manager buying bananas. We greeted. “Our individual loves bananas.”

“He’s still there?” I said.

“Yes, three weeks.”

“Did a parent die?”

“Yes.”

I nodded. Kept shopping for three beautiful women who themselves might become Respite House emergency placements.

I’ve broached this topic with DDS and our agency top management. There are zero systems in place. Families have to cobble together plans on a wing and a prayer. Can you rely on family to take over? Can you put your faith in the private group home system?
