U.S. President Donald Trump called the law banning the import of Russian fuel into the United States “pretty bad.” He said he would look into the matter after speaking with a reporter at the White House. During a conversation with reporters, one of them drew Trump’s attention to a tanker carrying Russian diesel fuel that was crossing the Atlantic Ocean and was presumably headed for the U.S.

The journalist noted that in 2022, Congress passed a law prohibiting the unloading of such fuel on U.S. soil. The bill was signed by then-President Joe Biden.

In response, Trump first asked whether the journalist was referring to the Jones Act. However, the journalist clarified that he was referring to a different piece of legislation passed by Congress and signed by Biden.

Upon hearing this, the U.S. president spoke negatively about the bill.

“Oh, Biden? How do you even import... Well, then it’s probably a pretty bad law. I’ll look into it. Of course,” Trump said.

Thus, the U.S. president promised to address the current ban, but did not specify whether his administration intends to revise the law or take any other steps.

As is well known, Trump and Russian dictator Putin recently signed a diesel agreement that partially lifts sanctions against Moscow and allows Russia to import limited amounts of fuel into the United States.

In this way, Trump sought to salvage the situation ahead of the elections amid rising diesel prices, which had greatly upset Americans. But, as is well known, Trump’s party lost the U.S. midterm elections—this move did not save the Republicans from defeat.
