This is MASSIVE!
The Marshall Islands has become the first country to launch a true Universal Basic Income programme! Absolutely amazing that it's finally been accomplished by a country through political will. #UBI
BREAKING: Marshall Islands becomes the first country to launch a Universal Basic Income program. Every resident (about 33k people) will receive $200 every 3 months. This works out to being about 11% of GDP per capita. If the US did that percentage, the UBI would be about $770/mo.
Huge congratulations to @StephenDOBrien on his promotion to DCAO of Corporate Services in #Guelph. As a Councillor, I had the pleasure of working with Stephen when he was the City Clerk; his knowledge and professionalism always reached the highest standards. Big win for the city!
We're excited to share that Stephen O'Brien has accepted the role of Deputy CAO of Corporate Services. His first official day in this position will be Monday, September 29. https://t.co/s0LvMpn3Ev
Some folks: "We need a vacant land tax on homes in #Guelph to free up dwelling space and combat the housing crisis."
Experts in Australia: "Hold my beer."
Experts in Australia are pushing for a new tax on spare bedrooms as a solution to the nation’s deepening housing crisis.
They argue that too many homes have more bedrooms than residents, creating a mismatch in housing supply.
By taxing unused rooms, they believe it would pressure people to downsize and free up more appropriately sized homes for others.
Offering general tax breaks when the government is in a budgetary deficit is shortsighted fiscal management.
Either collect more revenue or decrease expenses.

On behalf of #Guelph residents, I thank in advance all Federal candidates and their teams for strictly adhering to both the letter and spirit of the city's election sign bylaw over the next few weeks, ensuring resident safety and community standards. 👍

@scottsantens Scott, why do you think there's no talk about tax recapture of UBI money to help fund it? If I'm given $1000 and spend it, the gov't takes their 20% (or whatever). Then the place I spent it spends the $800 and the gov't takes 20%, etc. More UBI cheques = more incoming tax, right?
@V_SureshNaik The City wouldn't need to charge DCs if the province covered all those costs instead. Not likely to happen, but the province could decide to move forward with an Ontario-wide policy.
In #Guelph, who do you think should cover the $67K the City collects in Development Charges to contribute to the services and infrastructure needed as the City grows:
A) Only the people who purchase the new homes
B) All taxpayers in Guelph
C) All taxpayers in Ontario
A new OREA & @abacusdataca poll released today found that prohibitive costs like development charges are pushing the dream of homeownership further out of reach for Ontarians. We need to cut these fees to bring affordability back home. https://t.co/GUzUvWcMRK
Here's a helpful video by the @cityofguelph that helps explain Development Charges and why they are vital to support a city's growth.
