Chris Gallaway, executive director of Friends of Medicare, says there is no data that shows health card misuse is a problem.
“We don’t hear from doctors offices or hospitals or elsewhere that misuse of health cards is an issue they’re experiencing,” #ableg
I went to see cherry blossoms in Yoshino. I took the train from Osaka, a long ride but everyone said it was worth it.
Got there and it was packed. Like thousands of people packed. I couldn't even see the trees through the crowds.
I was pretty disappointed. Came all this way to see cherry blossoms and could barely get a photo without 50 people in it.
Started walking away from the main area, just to escape the crowds. Found a small path going up the mountain that most people weren't taking.
Followed it for maybe 20 minutes. The crowds disappeared. I found myself alone on this path surrounded by cherry blossom trees with no one around.
It was perfect. Exactly what I'd imagined.
I sat on a bench just taking it in. An old woman came up the path, saw me, and smiled. She had a whole picnic setup in her bag.
She laid out a blanket right near the bench and started unpacking food. Onigiri, fruit, tea in a thermos.
She offered me an onigiri. I tried to politely refuse, she insisted. I accepted.
We sat there together, not talking because we didn't share a language, just eating and looking at the cherry blossoms.
After a while she packed up her things, gave me another onigiri for later, and continued up the path.
I stayed there for another hour. A few other people came by but it never got crowded. Everyone was quiet, respectful. Taking photos but also just sitting and appreciating it.
On my way back down, I saw the old woman again. She was sitting with what looked like her daughter and grandkids, having the same kind of quiet picnic.
She saw me and waved. I waved back.
Sometimes the best experiences happen when you get away from where you're supposed to be.
The way neurotypicals can just decide to do something and then immediately do it. No 3-hour mental loading screen, no negotiating with themselves, no opening 17 tabs first. Yeah that’s it.
A few years ago, I was helping a kid find a book for a school project.
Couldn't have been older than 9.
He needed something about Native American history, so I walked him over to the right section and pulled a book off the shelf.
Me: This one's pretty good.
Me: It talks about different tribes, traditions, and where they lived.
Me: There's even a map in the back.
Kid: Awesome. Thank you!
He grabs the book and heads off.
Simple interaction.
Or so I thought.
A few seconds later, another customer walks up to me looking genuinely concerned.
Customer: Why would you tell him that?
Me: Tell him what?
Customer: That those people are real.
Me: ...which people?
Customer: Native Americans.
I laughed a little because I thought she was joking.
She wasn't.
Me: Well...
Me: Because they are real.
Customer: No they aren't.
Me: They absolutely are.
Customer: No.
Customer: They're movie characters.
Me: Movie characters?
Customer: Yeah.
Customer: Like cowboys.
At this point my brain completely stalled.
Me: I'm sorry...
Me: Do you think Native Americans only existed in Western movies?
Customer: Exactly.
Me: You know there are Native Americans alive right now?
Customer: No there aren't.
Me: There definitely are.
Customer: That's ridiculous.
The confidence was incredible.
Not a shred of doubt.
Not even curiosity.
Just absolute certainty.
Customer: Next you're going to tell me cowboys were real too.
I stared at her for a second.
Trying to figure out whether I was being pranked.
Me: Ma'am...
Me: Who do you think the movies were based on?
Customer: ...
Me: ...
Customer: Well that's just your opinion.
And then she walked away.
To this day, that's still one of the strongest displays of confidence I've ever witnessed.
Not intelligence.
Just confidence.
This will crush our EDs
Those without a driver’s license, or who haven’t taken the time to renew, will all go to the EDs to seek care.
We can’t say no there… everyone gets seen whether they have coverage or not.
Prepare to wait even longer in ED WRs Albertans
@HyphenatedJay Japan known as the land of total vague speech where social cues and reading the room are the most important thing sounds like actual hell for autistics
@The_Brian_Life Interesting “it seems to me that as those kids who say “on accident” grow up (some of whom are even unaware that “by accident” is an option, let alone the preferred phrase of grown-ups) “on accident” will become the main, accepted phrase” https://t.co/X9mvlbwraA
i can’t use em dashes because apparently that’s an ai tell.
i can’t use questions because that’s an ai tell.
i can’t use an oxford comma because that’s an ai tell.
i can’t structure thoughts too neatly because that’s an ai tell.
at what point are writers allowed to just… write naturally again 😭
@BarbLarochelle Lifelong Albertan here. Kinew's clapback was 100% the best part of that news conference. That media is more uncomfortable with Kinew calling out lies than with the lies themselves is telling.
Canada needs more Wab and less Dani!

The slow life philosophy:
- quiet morning coffee
- rainy days
- deep conversations
- text > calls
- doing things alone
- staying home all day doing nothing
- deep existential questions
- watching classic movies
- 700 page books
- nature walks
- music
- a purpose
- silence
Hills I will die on as a doctor obsessed with cardiometabolic health:
-Women are not “bad at self care.” They are drowning in invisible labor and mental load.
-Sleep deprivation is a public health issue.
-Chronic stress absolutely affects physical health.
-You cannot wellness your way out of unaffordable healthcare, childcare, food, and housing.
-Telling people to “just lose weight” without addressing mental health, food access, medications, medical conditions, sleep, finances, and time is just lazy.
-A salad will not cancel out a strained healthcare system.
-Postpartum recovery deserves the same seriousness as any other major medical event.
-Wellness misinformation has harmed people’s relationship with food more than fruit ever will.
-Prevention is important, but not every illness is a personal failure.
-A healthy woman is not a luxury. She is the backbone of families, communities, and society.
Caring for patients is the key element of my profession that brings me joy. Despite all of the threats to providing real care, it remains imperative that we keep this focus in medicine
“For Learie, 52, this isn’t just a policy change, it’s a life-altering crisis.
Learie and his wife, Deborah who is also on AISH, face a harsh reality. Under the transition to ADAP, they stand to lose $400 per month.”
