“The @ERC_Research has a clear mission, to foster scientific excellence and fund breakthrough frontier research. That must be its strategy, and it has pursued it with spectacular results.” - @janpalmowski in @timeshighered about the #CompetitivenessCompass

[Times Higher Education @timeshighered]

The European Commission’s Competitiveness Compass for the EU has sparked concern among sector leaders, who fear that its emphasis on “strategic interests” could indicate a reduction in autonomy for the European Research Council

[Jan Palmowski @janpalmowski]

This is welcome news - but why the secrecy? who in the Commission is assuring us (and with what authority) that the ERC's autonomy will be respected by the Commission? Given the (hopefully unnecessary) concerns caused, we need an assurance from the top! @vonderleyen @EZaharievaEU

We urge the EU to:
✅ Underscore curiosity-driven research @ERC_Research
✅ Equip students with future-ready skills
✅ Collaborate with national governments
