Concerning the NEXRAD radar at the Shelby County Airport… this is from NWS BMX

The WSR-88D radar (KBMX) serving Central Alabama is currently out of service due to a hardware failure. National Weather Service technicians have been working continuously to diagnose and repair the issue, and replacement parts are being expedited to restore service as quickly as possible.

At this time, it is uncertain whether the radar will be fully operational before the onset of expected severe weather later today and tonight.

Central Alabama remains well-covered by multiple surrounding NWS radars, including those in nearby regions, which will continue to provide meteorologists with sufficient data to monitor storms and issue timely warnings. In addition, satellite data, surface observations, lightning detection, and other tools remain fully available and operational.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham will continue to closely monitor weather conditions and issue all necessary watches and warnings to protect life and property.

We strongly encourage the public to:

Have multiple ways to receive warnings, including NOAA Weather Radio, Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), and trusted media sources
Review your severe weather safety plans ahead of today’s storms
Stay weather-aware throughout the day and evening

We will provide updates as new information becomes available regarding radar restoration.
