Former Navy SEAL fighting for the future of the West. Leadership | Faith | Philosophy | Defense Tech | Health Director of Ops at UNION, Manufacturing the future
I think this is the greatest display of the reality of leadership and how difficult it is.
Eisenhower said, “Leadership is getting people to do what you want, when you want, and they WANT to do it.”
That you could get people to WANT to do anything is the true challenge. You can’t force people to want something.
You can only influence and invite.
The best compliment my wife ever gave me, she said, “you make the wrong things seem stupid.”
And that is the skill of a GREAT leader.
Can you make it clear and obvious for your team that you know which way is best? Do they believe you are capable of walking that path?
If so, they will follow you to the ends of the earth.
Are we crazy to build in public?
Excerpt from my last therapy session...
Therapist - "So Russell, is this "Build in Public" in the room with us right now?"
Russell - " Uhhh, Yeah it's standing right behind you."
Therapist -> Turning slowly to the right " OH SH&T!"
@Russell_MFG_USA You should the see look on a TSA agents face when they pull you aside for detection and you tell them, “just a heads up, I probably still have C4 on my hands from yesterday.”
Great lesson I was taught in the SEAL teams, that’s been true at @UNION_Prime and every other great team I’ve been a part of.
“All complicated problems are just a bunch of simple problems put together.”
The path to overcoming complication and complexity is mastery of basics.
Just spent a week planning our @UNION_Prime factory in Dallas.
Don’t sleep on the level of work that goes into opening a large factory.
-Uniforms? Flame + Arc resistant.
-Scrap removal contract ?
-Steel-Brass-Carbide Inserts
-Fire suppression around presses.
-AGV pathing
-HazWaste disposal
Cameras and security
-Server room set up
-Lube and oil storage
-Shift structure
-14 interviews.
This is just a tiny glimpse of the things we did this week that is not about equipment or product.
I love everyone wanting to set up a new factory but many have no idea of the complexity they are signing up for.
HMU if you need help.
@ScrutineerLuca Data point: been talking to a ton of junior engineers, and it appears an overwhelming majority have spent their college focus on “research” rather then “build.”
Encourage students to BUILD
At the end of this year we will hold up our first part to the world and show what’s possible.
Be a part of history in helping us build this team.
