The false self,
changes
The true self,
is changeless
"Step into the fire
of self-discovery.
This fire will not burn you,
it will only burn what you are not."
Mooji
What you need is to be aware of being aware. Be aware deliberately and consciously, broaden and deepen the field of awareness.
You are always conscious of the mind, but you are not aware of yourself as being conscious.
Nisargadatta
Formless He is, though inhabiting form. In the midst of the fleeting He abides forever. All pervading and supreme is the Self.
The wise man knowing Him in His true nature, transcends all grief.
Katha Upanishad
You go watch a movie.
The movie is your life. Your experiences, relationships, sensations, perceptions, thoughts and emotions are all a part of the movie.
But YOU are the screen on which the movie is played on.
The screen is always there, unchanging and ever-present. It was there before the movie started and will be there after it ends.

No doubt imagination is richly creative. Universe within universe are built on it. Yet they are all in space and time, past and future, which just do not exist.
Your self-image is the most changeful thing you have. It is utterly vulnerable, at the mercy of a passerby. A bereavement, the loss of a job, an insult, and your image of yourself, which you call your person, changes deeply.
Nisargadatta Maharaj
Self-surrender is the surrender of all self-concern. It cannot be done, it happens when you realise your true nature. Verbal self-surrender, even when accompanied by feeling, is of little value and breaks down under stress. At the best it shows an aspiration, not an actual fact.
- Nisargadatta.
If we can establish a relationship with each other in which open dialogue takes place – a free, self-critical, self-aware dialogue of questioning, doubting, inquiring – then we are both learning, are both communing with each other’s point of view.
Under the right teacher the disciple learns to learn and will not imprison his disciple in a prescribed set of ideas, feelings and actions; on the contrary, he will show him patiently the need to be free from all ideas and set patterns of behaviour, to be vigilant and earnest and go with life wherever it takes him, not to enjoy or suffer, but to understand and learn.
~Nisargadatta.
When the thought “I” rises and you hold to it without letting other thoughts come, that pure “I” will itself destroy the false “I”. This is the direct path.
If you hold fast to that “I” without allowing a second thought, the false “I” will vanish. What remains is the real “I” - Arunachala itself.
~ Ramana Maharshi
Guru Vachaka Kovai
(verses 731 & 732)
When I say that you merge into your consciousness, I do not mean that there is consciousness and there is you. What I mean is you really awaken to yourself. You awaken to your true nature. There is no consciousness hiding somewhere, and you have to go and find it.
