Colorado is a Castle Doctrine state.

Colorado Revised Statute 18-12-804.5

The Castle Doctrine means you should be able to be absolutely safe in your own home and if you must use lethal force while in your home, you should be free of criminal and civil prosecution.

Four things must be met for the Castle Doctrine to be met:

1) an uninvited entry into the home
2) the perpetrator is committing or intends to commit a crime in addition to the uninvited entry
3) in addition to the previous 2, they intend to commit or are committing physical harm against a person within that dwelling - no matter how slight
4) they have to actually be in the home - not in your yard, not in your garage, or on your balcony or patio.

This man was lucky.
