The current Bangladesh regime, which draws its legitimacy more from the July-August 2024 uprising than from the flawed February 2026 elections, which lacked any semblance of fairness, is understandably "outraged" over Sheikh Hasina's assertion at the @FCCNewDelhi event that her government's overthrow resulted not from a spontaneous, organic movement but from an orchestrated, foreign-assisted regime-change operation.

The regime has good reason to fear Hasina's narrative.

Muhammad Yunus himself acknowledged that the campaign to overthrow Hasina was not spontaneous but "meticulously designed" and deliberately executed. Standing beside an applauding Bill Clinton at a Clinton Global Initiative event in New York on September 24, 2024, Yunus said: "It's not just [that it] suddenly came, it's not like that," adding, "It was very well designed, even the leadership — people don't know who the leaders are, so you can't catch one and say, 'it's over.' It's not over."

Yunus then introduced Clinton to the "brain" behind the operation that toppled Hasina — Mahfuz Alam, who had previously been arrested over alleged links to the Hizb ut-Tahrir terror outfit, which is proscribed in Bangladesh as well as several Western countries. After the regime change, Alam sought to recast himself as a "student" leader with no connection to Hizb ut-Tahrir. Yunus later appointed him as a minister-level adviser.

The Biden administration, after more than a year of pressure against Hasina's government, swiftly welcomed her ouster and facilitated the return of U.S.-based Muhammad Yunus to Dhaka to lead the interim administration, effectively endorsing a violent transfer of power.
