Implementing David Procedure in Latin America: Closing the Gap with High-Income Countries
Can the David procedure achieve outcomes comparable to those reported by leading centers worldwide?
A new study from Colombia suggests the answer is yes.
Following the implementation of a valve-sparing aortic root replacement (David procedure) program, investigators reported 0.9% 30-day mortality, 99% one-year survival, and 100% freedom from reintervention and endocarditis. The findings demonstrate that, with dedicated expertise, outcomes in Latin America can match those of high-income countries.
The study highlights the potential of aortic valve preservation to reduce the need for prosthetic valves and long-term anticoagulation—an especially valuable strategy for patients in middle-income countries.
