Michelin just rugged their NFT project and holders called Michelin Explorer Club.

Michelin is a multi billion $ company.

"The promotion-then-shutdown pattern is the legally interesting part. France has strict rules on pratiques commerciales trompeuses (misleading commercial practices, Art. L121-2 ff. Code de la consommation, implementing the EU Unfair Commercial Practices Directive). If a company actively promoted a product as ongoing — inducing purchases — while internally having already decided to discontinue it, that could qualify as a misleading practice, potentially even escroquerie (fraud, Art. 313-1 Code pénal) in egregious cases. The DGCCRF (French consumer protection authority) can investigate and sanction this, and misleading practices carry criminal penalties in France, not just civil ones.

The hard part is proof. You'd need to show Michelin knew or had decided to shut down at the time of the promotion, and that the promotion contained false or materially misleading claims that caused people to buy. "We promoted our club and later decided to close it" is legal. "We promoted future benefits we knew we wouldn't deliver" is not. Intent and timing are everything, and that's exactly what's invisible from outside.

Practical routes for affected holders would be a complaint to the DGCCRF via SignalConso, or collective action through a French consumer association — both low-cost first steps that don't require proving fraud upfront."

On Opensea they have still not put up a notice warning customers and there have been several transactions after they informally announced closure.
