Anybody here where your family actually went Haji by ship? I want to hear the stories.
Before Tabung Haji, the haj started at a Penang jetty.
Imagine, sailing to Mecca.
For nearly two centuries, from 1786 to 1977, Penang was the region's haj port. Pilgrims from Malaya, Siam and the Dutch East Indies gathered there to board ships everyone simply called kapal haji.
Singapore was the other great staging point. Pilgrims filled the lodging houses around Arab Street and Kampong Glam, waiting weeks for their ship.
Before the Suez Canal opened in 1869, the voyage to Jeddah took around three months. After it, about two weeks. Still long enough that many boarded old, frail, and having sold everything they owned for the ticket.
That was the world Tabung Haji was born into. When the first counter opened in 1963, pilgrims were still boarding ships. Planes only fully took over in 1977.
So TH spent its first 14 years helping people save for a sea voyage. And in 1969 it actually absorbed the old haj affairs office headquartered in Penang. Half of the fund's DNA is that jetty.
Today the same journey takes less than a day. Malaysia's grandparents' generation gave up months of their lives, and everything they owned, just to stand where people now fly.
Yes Haji Lane is called Haji Lane because of this.
For over a century those shophouses lodged haj pilgrims waiting for their ship to Jeddah.
Arab brokers on the lane arranged the passage. Some pilgrims hawked nearby just to afford the final leg.
Bussorah Street next door was literally called Kampong Kaji, Pilgrim Village.
Up to 10,000 pilgrims staged in Singapore a year, and Arab Street held the traders serving them.
Today's hipster lane was once the departure lounge to Mecca.
The Chinese Peranakan in Msia used to be considered an ethnicity on their own “Baba Nyonya” and were even bumiputeras before the 1970s
They were then categorized as ‘Cina’, though recently, Melaka born Peranakans can adopt ‘Baba Nyonya’ as their race in their national ID (but revoked of their Bumiputera status)
