Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny” (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” Gospel Library). @RangaMberi Hi Ranga . I would love to give you a personal tour during the open house. I will look for you in a few months. The open house is a great opportunity for friends of church like you to learn about our beliefs and be inside that Temple.
Today during general conference I shared the experience of my nephew’s son, Trey, who was born with life-threatening heart complications. Trey was blessed to survive well past these days of his infancy, growing into an exceptional young man who was full of hope and faith.
As I shared earlier today, Trey was scheduled for a heart transplant surgery earlier this year. There were great expectations as he entered the operating room. However, during the surgery there were devastating complications and Trey never regained consciousness.
Because of time limits, I was unable to share the depth of faith and hope found in this extraordinary family. I hope those who heard my talk felt something of my admiration for them.
I would like to share with you some additional words from Trey; his father, Ben; and his mother, Robbie, so you can get a sense for the great hope in Jesus Christ displayed by each of them.
During Trey’s funeral, Robbie shared the following:
“Trey did find joy and happiness in his life. He had joy and happiness in knowing that he had a Savior, Jesus Christ, and I want to testify on behalf of Trey that he knew that Jesus Christ atoned for his sins and that He died for him so he could have eternal life. I am grateful for my Heavenly Father. I am grateful that we have been strengthened and blessed and for the beautiful blessing that we had to have Trey in our family. I know that we will see him again. I am grateful for the beautiful plan of salvation.”
Just after his wife spoke, Ben shared his thoughts:
“It brings me great joy to think of Trey in the state of rest, the state of peace. Trey built his foundation upon the rock of Jesus Christ. Helaman 5:12 was his favorite scripture. He had prepared himself to meet God. He has inspired me to work as he was working to be a better disciple of Jesus Christ. So many have reached out and shared with us how Trey has inspired them.”
And, of course, Trey himself was an impressive example of a disciple of Jesus Christ. As he was applying to be accepted into the BYU Accounting program, he shared the following in an application essay:
“My mom told me that even when I was little, I never complained about any of the things I had to do and that I never asked why I had to deal with so many health problems. I have never felt sorry for myself and that is because I have always known the importance of having faith in Jesus Christ and the testimony of the plan of salvation. I trust in my Heavenly Father and His plan for my life.”
May we each learn from the examples of this sweet family in the trials of our own lives. The peace we seek may not come as quickly as we desire, but I promise you that as you trust in the Lord, His peace will come.
May we nurture our precious faith, pressing forward with a perfect brightness of hope. I testify that our hope is our Savior Jesus Christ. Through Him, all our righteous dreams will be realized. He lives and He loves you.
Jesus Christ wants nothing more than for us to repent and come unto Him so that He can justify and sanctify us. In this desire, He is relentless and unwavering.
“Just as salt in its purest form has the power to enhance and preserve, so too does our faith in Jesus Christ when it is nourished and protected by our dedication to Christlike service and love.” —Elder José A. Teixeira #GeneralConference
“As we reach out to Him in faith, He will always be there, and in His time, He will be ready and willing to grasp our hands and pull us up to a safe place.” —Elder Juan Pablo Villar #GeneralConference
"If we are gathering in remembrance of the Saviour and the redemption He has made possible, our faces should reflect our joy and gratitude!" —Elder @PatrickKearon#GeneralConference
“In a world filled with contention and division, where civil discourse has been replaced with judgment and scorn, and friendships are defined by -isms and -ites, I have come to know that there is a clear, simple, and divine example we can look to for unity, love, and belonging. That example is Jesus Christ. I testify that He is the great Unifier.” —Elder David L. Buckner #GeneralConference
“When we consciously choose to follow the guidance of prophets and apostles, our capacity to have the Holy Ghost as a constant companion grows.” —Elder D. Martin Goury #GeneralConference
