Reading Dune, it’s so clear Frank Herbert understood the threat of AI decades ago.

In his books, humanity once fought a catastrophic war against “thinking machines”: the Butlerian Jihad. Afterwards, artificial intelligence was banned.

But Herbert’s insight was waaaaay more interesting than “thinking machines will rise up and kill us”.

The machines weren’t really the enemy. The actual danger was, as a reverend mother conceded, “human beings using machines to dominate other human beings”.

People handed over more and more of their thinking, judgement and agency to machines because they were promised convenience and freedom.

What they actually got instead was a concentration of power in the hands of those who controlled the technology: The Titans.

Sound familiar?

The technology itself isn’t the problem. It’s those that control it. Put it under democratic control and the problems don’t disappear but do become more manageable.
