2026 Sports in Kansas 5A Player of the Year
Grayton Gross, Salina Central, Sr.
Few players in Kansas had a bigger impact on winning than Grayton Gross this spring.
The Salina Central senior turned in one of the state’s top two-way seasons while helping lead the Mustangs to a 26-3 record and a trip to the Class 5A State Tournament. Gross was the centerpiece of a team that spent the entire season among the state’s elite and produced one of the best records in school history.
At the plate, Gross hit .483 with 42 hits, 29 runs scored, four doubles, four triples, four home runs and 33 RBIs. He consistently delivered in key situations and provided a spark at the top of one of Kansas’ most productive lineups.
On the mound, Gross was equally dominant. He finished with a 0.47 ERA over 44.2 innings, allowing just three earned runs all season while striking out 68 batters. Opponents managed only 23 hits against him as he established himself as one of the premier pitchers in Class 5A.
Whether it was producing a big hit, shutting down an opponent on the mound or leading by example, Gross delivered throughout the season and helped elevate Salina Central into championship contention.
For his outstanding two-way season and leadership of a 26-win state tournament team, Grayton Gross is the 2026 Sports in Kansas Class 5A Player of the Year.
Note: Gross earned the honor following a tie in the final voting with Piper standout and Texas Tech signee Myles Ross, who will also be recognized separately for his outstanding season. #sportsinkansas

@AmyosportKS Quite a list. Of course I would vote for the guy that wore #10 for Salina Central. His only earned runs he gave up were in the first outing after 2 weeks down with arm trouble. Didn’t have the full arsenal. Batted .495 and most importantly drove in runs every time ducks on.
@SPostSports@SC_Mustangs Our team didn’t have its best night but this season provided so many great memories. I’m grateful to all the players, coaches, and families who made it all possible.
The wait is over…
