A Club in Chibolya by Albert Kata presents a quieter view of a township known for its drug culture. Perhaps this reflects a reset following the 2020 death of its most famous resident, Gerald Musalale, otherwise known as Seven Spirits.
Chibolya was established in 1973 and has since grown into Lusaka’s largest komboni. Over the decades, it has earned a reputation as a hub for drugs and crime while functioning largely as a “country” unto itself, frequently clashing with the police in running battles. In 2019, then President Edgar Lungu was widely reported as saying that Chibolya would be demolished, rebuilt, and modernized with funding from Abu Dhabi.
Chibolya/Ichibolya - is a Bemba word for a site were a village once stood.
