Thousands of Marines on the way: Pentagon sends reinforcements to the Middle East

The U.S. is deploying about 2,500 Marines on amphibious ships, including the USS Tripoli.

The force is the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) — a mobile, ship-based unit capable of rapid deployment, landing operations, and acting independently.
