The reasoning behind these declarations is because they feel they are not getting the federal nor state support needed to combat this crisis

Its long past due for the President to declare a National Emergency Declaration so local officials on the front lines are getting the support they need

🚨🇺🇸 Flesh-eating screwworm detected in the US for the first time since 1966.

A 3-week-old calf in La Pryor, Texas, just 30 miles from the Mexican border, is the first confirmed case.

This parasite burrows through living flesh. Females lay eggs in open wounds. If untreated, it kills the host.

The USDA is now establishing a 20km quarantine zone and preparing to release millions of sterile flies to contain the spread.

This has been advancing through Central America and Mexico for over a year. Everyone saw it coming.

Now it's here. And beef prices are about to feel it.

People who continue to blame New World Screwworm crisis on the Biden Administration need to stop

The Secretary has had 15 months to prepare a competent response, and despite what some are saying, the response has been lackluster and unserious

Let’s go over some facts:

In order to eradicate the NWS, we need somewhere between 500M-600M sterile flies produced WEEKLY, and we currently produce 100M weekly

There are current mechanisms and technologies that could be deployed IMMEDIATELY in order to produce those numbers that have been ignored by the USDA for the past 6 months

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) which oversees the NWS response is a disaster. There were some competent veterinarians interviewed during the transition willing to serve and reform the bureau who were blocked by the Secretary and her team. Instead they decided to retain the same director from the Biden Administration (ironic) who botched the response to the Avian flu

The tick rider program (people on horseback looking at wildlife and livestock in desolate areas) is completely disorganized, so the “surveillance” mechanisms that continue to be touted are not sufficient enough to detect these infestations in extremely rural areas in the timely manner required to combat this

On top of all this, producers in Texas are being pressured NOT TO REPORT potential cases, and if it wasn’t for some brave people reporting on this current case in LaPryor, it’s possible it would have been covered up

We even had our account on X suspended for a month when we showed a picture of what an infection looks like in a human, shortly before there was a human case confirmed in the US last August

The Secretary of Agriculture continued to assure the public that the Screwworm situation was “under control” and continued to ignore concerns and requests from producers and elected officials from her home state of Texas

This is not something to no longer downplay or brush off

The Agricultural industry is already entering into hellish conditions this summer because of drought and rising fuel and input prices, compounded now with an outbreak of flesh eating maggots

We need serious and dedicated leadership on this

We need a whole of government approach

We need states next to Texas and Mexico to be able access the resources and funding to combat this pest as they will be caught completely off guard when it reaches their states

🚨FLESH-EATING PARASITE FOUND IN SOUTH TEXAS CALF🚨

Meet the New World screwworm fly.

Eradicated since 1966 in the US, this parasitic fly lays eggs in fresh wounds of warm-blooded animals.

The larvae feed on the host’s flesh, which — if left untreated — can cause the animal to die.

While the screwworm fly is NOT contagious, it does threaten the cattle industry.

It’s rare for humans to contract the parasite, but a Maryland man who traveled to El Salvador was diagnosed with this visitor in 2025.

The US Department of Agriculture is releasing millions of sterilized screwworm flies into targeted areas because female flies only mate once.

This method — called Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) — will help to stop the spread of the screwworm fly.

Cattle ranchers should be on the lookout for rapidly growing, foul-smelling wounds that have white egg masses.
