It's a very frustrating situation for them and a very hard pill to swallow. There absolutely are things which they did well (primarily being able to appear organised, disciplined, etc), but at a deeper level those things aren't necessarily there. That isn't to disparage the people involved - they could develop that in time - but really the deeper level is what needs to be developed FIRST.

For instance, they were disciplined when marching around doing protests/demonstrations, but didn't have the underlying discipline to restrain themselves from needlessly attacking a group of Aboriginals and didn't think, 'Hmm, considering that we are trying to legitimise ourselves as a genuine political movement at this time, and we've just had a really successful day, let's not ruin it by doing this.'

Sewell and the other personalities leading it had organisational abilities, but it appears as though there was no effort made to teach or cultivate these abilities in others. Which is why as soon as Sewell, Davis, etc themselves were not physically present (by virtue of jail, saction etc), the whole organisation becomes paralysed.
