The reality is that the way our highly functioning government makes the most of its money is by taxing us, and then sending huge sums of those tax dollars overseas to corrupt regimes and failed states, which ends up costing the American taxpayer even more when we have to deal with their consequences or clean up the mess they’ve caused.

Take Venezuela here, once one of the richest nations in Latin America, its economic collapse and state corruption haven’t just wrecked its own society—they’ve fueled crime, drugs, and regional instability that hit us back here at home.

Venezuela had become a major transit hub for cocaine and other narcotics moving toward the U.S., with an estimate that around 24% of all global cocaine flows passed through Venezuelan territory, contributing to the criminal economy worth billions and enriching organized crime networks, narco-traffickers, terrorists, and even some of our nation-state adversaries.

For its own citizens, the breakdown in law enforcement and rampant corruption helped gangs expand, and led to massive numbers of migrants fleeing the crisis (which imposed another cost on us with 770,000 relocating here). We also allocated “humanitarian aid” to the Venezuela crisis which costed us about another $3 billion.

Meanwhile, increased drug flows have re-routed trafficking networks back through the Caribbean aimed at the U.S., forcing costly counter-narcotics operations and fueling violence and addiction problems domestically on our soil. Guess who foots that bill too, us.

That’s how it works, we create and then pay to clean up our own messes, these corrupt politicians skim their cut, and nearly everything takes forever to fix because far too many idiots are in charge inside our government. It’s never about oil.

As most know, the bill to defund the Taliban is before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the hill today, and it appears unlikely to advance. Senator Jeanne Shaheen is expected to oppose it, reportedly because she does not want NGOs included in the ban. Let’s be clear: the siphoning of money as funds move through NGOs is where much of the initial corruption occurs. Why is it such a battle to stop funding terrorists? What has happened to the moral compass of this nation?
