I've been going down a rabbit hole about sound, digital music and something we hear about all the time:
Frequency.
And I realized I didn't really understand how many different things that word can mean.
Think about a song you're listening to right now.
You might have heard that music contains frequencies like 440 Hz, 1 kHz, 5 kHz, etc.
But here's the strange part:
The actual sound isn't travelling through the internet to your phone.
When a microphone records a singer, it turns the sound into an electrical signal.
Your computer then takes thousands of measurements of that signal every second and turns them into numbers.
CD-quality audio uses:
44,100 measurements every second.
That's the sampling rate.
And this is where I discovered something called the Nyquist frequency.
The basic idea:
Nyquist frequency = half the sampling rate.
So with 44.1 kHz audio:
44.1 kHz ÷ 2 = 22.05 kHz
A 44.1 kHz system can therefore represent frequencies up to about 22.05 kHz, assuming it's designed correctly.
If you try to record frequencies above that without filtering them first, something weird happens.
It's called aliasing.
A high frequency can end up appearing as a completely different, lower frequency.
And then I went even deeper.
A=440 Hz.
We've all heard of 440 Hz, but I thought it meant something like “music is at 440 Hz.”
That's not what it means.
A=440 Hz means the musical note A4 is tuned to 440 cycles per second.
It's a reference point.
And here's what surprised me:
440 Hz isn't a law of nature.
Humans chose it.
For a long time, there wasn't one standard pitch everywhere. Different places and orchestras used different tuning levels.
In 1834, Johann Heinrich Scheibler proposed A=440 Hz as a standard after developing a way to measure musical pitch more accurately.
France later used A=435 Hz.
Eventually, international efforts moved toward a common standard, and A=440 Hz became the reference we commonly use today.
So when someone says:
“Someone changed the frequency of all music.”
That's not really what happened.
But there is a small piece of truth:
Humans decided where to place the musical ruler.
Physics doesn't say A must be exactly 440 Hz.
We chose that reference.
And then there's the famous 432 Hz vs 440 Hz debate.
You've probably seen people say 432 Hz is the “natural frequency of the universe,” while 440 Hz is artificial or harmful.
This is where things get complicated.
A=432 Hz is absolutely possible as a musical tuning. It simply means A4 is tuned slightly lower than 440 Hz.
Small scientific studies have compared 432 and 440 Hz, with some finding differences in things like heart rate or how people feel.
But that's very different from proving:
“432 Hz is the frequency of the universe.”
That hasn't been established by science.
And this is what I find fascinating.
We're using ��frequency” for completely different things:
440 Hz → musical reference pitch.
44.1 kHz → how often digital audio is measured.
22.05 kHz → Nyquist frequency for 44.1 kHz audio.
2.4 GHz → a radio frequency used by some Wi-Fi systems.
Same word.
Completely different ideas.
And then comes the part that really messed with my head:
When I press play on a song recorded somewhere else, the original sound doesn't travel through the internet to my headphones.
Information about the sound travels.
Sound becomes measurements.
Measurements become numbers.
Numbers become data.
Data travels through the internet.
My phone turns it back into an audio signal.
My headphones turn that signal into movement.
The movement pushes the air.
My ears detect it.
And my brain experiences it as music.
So the journey is basically:
Sound → measurements → numbers → data → internet → numbers → sound
I've worked with audio for years, and somehow I never stopped to think about how fucking strange that actually is.

I've been thinking about something weird about digital music.
When I press play on a song, I know the obvious answer: the music is being streamed to my phone through the internet.
But what does that actually mean?
A song is ultimately a waveform, changes in air pressure that we perceive as sound.
Digital audio can't send that physical waveform through the internet, though. So instead, the waveform is measured thousands of times every second and converted into numbers.
CD-quality audio, for example, takes 44,100 measurements every second.
And because of the Nyquist theorem, that 44.1 kHz sampling rate can represent frequencies up to 22.05 kHz.
Those numbers travel across the internet.
Then my phone takes those numbers, reconstructs the waveform, sends it through the DAC, amplifier and headphones…
…and suddenly I'm hearing a guitar that was recorded somewhere else.
The sound never travelled to me.
Information about the sound did.
And somehow, that feels completely fucking insane.

I'm single because I choose to be,
not because I couldn't find love.
I've been depressed, constantly zoned out, and emotionally exhausted. Some people who entered my life as friends took advantage of that vulnerability.
I remember attending a Sound Engineering course in Baner. About four months in, something changed. People started looking at me differently, as if I'd done something terribly wrong.
Then one woman approached me with a long face. The way she approached me, spoke, and looked at me made me feel that something was terribly wrong.
I stepped back.
I don't know what was actually happening. But in that moment, I became afraid that I was being set up for something. I feared it could turn into blackmail or a false accusation over something I hadn't done.
Maybe my fear was wrong. But the fear itself was real.
I've been afraid of relationships for much of my life. Not because I hate women. Not because I think every woman is dangerous.
I'm afraid because somewhere along the way, I learned to associate getting close to someone with the possibility of being hurt, misunderstood, or falsely accused.
So I chose distance.
This story goes much deeper than this. Deeper than a rabbit hole.
Maybe someday I'll tell the whole story.

“Neti Neti” - not this, not that.
Not the body.
Not the mind.
Not the thoughts.
Not the memories.
Not the personality.
Not the ego.
Fine.
But removing everything you can identify doesn't prove that something metaphysical remains.
Maybe you discovered the Self.
Or maybe you just removed the person and gave the absence a sacred name.
If we remove the body, memories, personality, thoughts, emotions and social identity, is there actually anything left or have we simply removed the person?
That's a genuinely difficult philosophical problem.
