In 1860 term Asoccer short for that was used but then was shortened to soccer. American Football was called Gridiron Football. So got back to 1800 UK for blame:p

Students at the University of Oxford in the 1880s distinguished between the sports of “rugger” (rugby football) and “assoccer” (association football). The latter term was further shortened to “soccer”
