Foreign man wandering, scavenging garbage for food, and sleeping in temple pavilions after overstaying in Thailand by more than 1,000 days

On 7 August 2026, a foreign man was found wandering around, scavenging through garbage for food to survive, and staying in temple pavilions in Bang Talat Subdistrict, Pak Kret District, Nonthaburi Province. Officials investigated and identified him as Mr. Odd Stian Hesseberg, aged 44, a Norwegian national.

Travel records showed that Mr. Hesseberg entered Thailand on 3 March 2023 on a tourist visa, originally permitted to stay until 16 April 2023.

He later applied for an extension at the Immigration Office in Nakhon Sawan Province and was allowed to stay until 16 May 2023.However, he is currently found to have overstayed by approximately 1,179 days.

Most recently, Nonthaburi Provincial Immigration officials took Mr. Hesseberg for questioning and fact-checking before proceeding according to Thai law, and coordinated with the Norwegian Embassy to arrange his return to his home country.

Mr. Hesseberg expressed thanks to the temple staff and local residents who had helped him with food and care during his time in Thailand.

He also shared that he was happy to be returning to Norway, his home country, after living in Thailand for more than three years.

BREAKING: Two suspects have confessed to killing two Russian siblings in an alleged attempt to steal their motorcycle, police said.

The suspects allegedly shot the younger brother dead and punched the older sister, causing her death. They reportedly buried the bodies near Khao Chi Chan in Chonburi and dismantled and buried the siblings' motorcycle before fleeing.

Police arrested the two suspects, aged 43 and 39, in Wang Sombun district of Sa Kaeo province on 31 July 2026. They were taken to the suspected burial site to identify where the bodies were allegedly hidden.
