A few words on the NBA investigation into Gary Trent Jr.’s $64m contract extension:
— Never forget that GTJ dropped a career high 44 points on April 10, 2021 on an insane 17-19 shooting (89.5%), representing a TS% between 85.3 - 94.4 (depending on how many FTs 2FGs and 3FGs made.) only for NN to give the game “chain” to Gillespie for scoring 6 points.
— Never forget that GTJ scored 30+ points in 5 straight games between January 25 to February 1, 2022, tying DDR’s franchise record;
— Never forget that GTJ dropped 42 points on February 10, 2022 on 15-26 shooting and 6-13 from 3, while making 6-7 FTs, representing at TS% of 72.2;
— Never forget that GTJ dropped 42 points on March 11, 2022 on 13-21 shooting and 8-11 from 3 while going 8-8 from the FT line, representing at TS% of 85.6%;
— Never forget that GTJ averaged 17-18ppg as a Raptor over 4 straight seasons;
— Never forget the 5 29+ games post TD and 18ppg that GTJ had in 2024;
— Never forget that he led the NBA in wide open 3s in 2024;
— More recently never forget that GTJ signed with the Bucks after being heavily recruited when they barely had an NBA roster and when GTJ reportedly had offers for the TPMLE; despite being given a bench role by Doc he ended up having an efficient season shooting 41.6% from 3 and a TS% of 59.1.;
— More recently, never forget that GTJ dropped 37 points on April 25, 2025 in the Bucks vs Indy playoff series on 11-16 shooting and 9-12 from 3. He was also 6-7 from the line representing a TS% of 96.96. That’s right, 96.96 TS%. He also had 4 steals;
— More recently, never forget that GTJ dropped 33 points on April 29, 2025 in the Bucks vs Indy playoff series on 12-25 shooting and 8-15 from 3. He was also 1-2 from the line representing a TS% of 63.76. He also had 5 steals;
— More recently GTJ averaged 50+% on corner 3s halfway through the season but Doc continued to decrease his minutes and usage to career lows (his final % was 42.5%);
— And not more than four months ago, GTJ scored 36 points on March 29, 2026 on 12-21 shooting and 9-15 from 3;
Any investigation will implicate the Bucks organization, Klutch Sports/Rich Paul and possibly Turner as well. There is also the prospect of GTJ suing Klutch Sports. If the contract was signed last summer no one bats an eye.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder just as a player’s value is based on a team’s perception of him. Let’s take a look at other questionable contracts:
- IQ jumped from $4.1m to $32.5m; his production is on par with GTJ’s stint in TO without being as big as a defensive disruptor and being significantly less available;
- BBJ went from a minimum contract to $23m over 2 seasons;
- KCP has a career average of 20ppg and was signed to a $22m contract for 4 years;
- Patrick Williams made another $18m on his gigantic 5 year $90m contract scoring 7ppg and shooting 37%;
- Toppin was given a 4 year $60m contract as a backup PF after averaging 10.3ppg;
- Braun was signed to a 5 year $125m contract on one good season and shot a meagre 30.1% from 3 this past season and averaged 12ppg; he only played in 44 games; his career 3 point average is 36.5%;
- Coumara was signed to a 4 year $81m salary just after scoring 11ppg in 2025;
- Graves was signed by the Lakers for $60m over 4 years. He shot 33.4% from 3 last year and for his career 36.6%. GTJ has a career 38.7% 3FG;
When viewed against GTJ’s career accomplishments and the above questionable contracts, GTJ’s relatively modest deal is justifiable and in line with the expected productivity of a young vet who is still only 27. What one cannot do is assess his deal based on ONE outlier year UNDER DOC largely WITHOUT GIANNIS and with two ball dominant combo guards who Doc gave a free hand to.
With a competent coach in the fold, if he is given 25-30 minutes and a more featured role in the offence he projects to average 12-14ppg making the contract more than worth it.

Gary Trent’s 4-Year, $64 Million Contract Is Official, And It’s Fully Guaranteed. Per, @WindhorstESPN
“It was signed today it’s now official, they announced it, the numbers went out to the whole league. All 4 years are fully guaranteed.”
To wit, check out the penalties for this in the CBA. (b) is how the league could punish the Bucks (though I doubt they will), but check out the bottom of (c), which is how Rich Paul could be suspended for >1 year.
So if you’re underpaid no one bats an eye but if you get overpaid you investigate it?
Investigate guys that take minimums or lesser deals when their market value is way higher as well then
Free agent guard Gary Trent Jr. has agreed to a four-year, $64 million deal to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul and agent Lucas Newton tells ESPN.
