Today I’d like to share my thoughts on this song.

Recently, I’ve been listening to a playlist called “AKB’s Greatest Songs” while working at the office. It includes songs like “Heavy Rotation,” “Gingham Check,” “UZA,” and “Saikyou Twintail.” By now, it has become a playlist filled with quite a few songs that I already know.

Every now and then, a song I was already familiar with would suddenly come on and make me think, “Was this song always this good?” There were many moments when I found myself stopping what I was doing and paying closer attention to the music.

AKB has an enormous and incredibly diverse catalogue. I looked it up, and apparently there are around 1,500 songs. That diversity is one of the greatest assets of a group with such a long history, and I don’t think it is possible to define all of those songs through a single sensibility or style.

Even so, this particular song feels especially unusual among AKB’s countless songs.

First of all, the lyrics deal with a subject that could never have appeared in their older songs. I’m sure I wasn’t the only person who was caught off guard by the lyric, “Trust flesh and blood over A.I.”

Even beyond such direct lyrics, the song as a whole explores concerns that many people living in modern society have probably had at least once. Together with those lyrics, the composition, choreography, and overall presentation also give the song a distinctly musical-like quality.

At first, I found myself wondering, “What kind of song is this?” But the more I listen to it, the more refreshing its modern sensibility feels—something that was difficult to find in AKB’s earlier songs.

The member selection is another interesting point. The lineup seems to have been chosen to match the overall mood of the song, bringing together members with a modern and sophisticated kind of beauty.

It begins with a somewhat cynical and pessimistic vibe, but ultimately arrives at a hopeful and empowering message. That part feels very AKB-like to me. In many ways, it is a genuinely fascinating song.
