On #WorldDiabetesDay, a reminder that exercise is medicine.
Muscle health matters for metabolic health. Muscle is a huge organ system in the body. The more we use it, the more efficient it gets at using & storing carbs & sugar we eat, directly improving risks for chronic disease
Some of the health benefits of resistance training:
Bone strength and lower fracture risk 🦴
Improved blood sugar control 🩸
Stronger muscles and less muscle loss 💪
Improved cognitive performance 🧠
Improved balance and ADL ability 🚽

10 Nutrition and Fitness Goals for 2024.
I first published this list last year as a blog for 2023, but thought I'd share as a Twitter thread here as well 🤓.
These are not my own goals, more like ideas. Some I already do, some I would like to do more often.
I don't know where the idea that most people eat enough protein came from A loooot of people I see have basically 0 grams at breakfast (one of their main meals), or maybe about 10 grams of low-quality pro. Potentially missing 1/3 of their opportunities for good protein intake.
You can explore all the different blogs I wrote on my website by clicking below if you want to 🤓
"Nutrition is both an art & a science. The science can be complex but the art is finding what works for you. These blogs weave the art with the science..."

A short thread on diabetes & East Coasters:
1 in 3 Nova Scotians & New Brunswickers live with diabetes or prediabetes
7 out of 10 cases of prediabetes will eventually develop into type 2 diabetes
This month is #DiabetesAwarenessMonth, do you know what prediabetes is?
I've just published my latest blog. This time, I review the book The Elephant in the Room: One Fat Man's Quest to Get Smaller in a Growing America, written by @tommytomlinson

Thinking a lot lately about low-energy availability (LEA) in the general population. I wonder how prevalent it is.
The term is mainly associated with athletes, via underfueling excessive exercise.
The results of the study below, and what I see in practice, concern me.
👇
I published my 14th newsletter yesterday. I talked about:
- the importance of protein & resistance training, even [especially] as we age
- a book I'm reading
- a quote I'm thinking about
I add a bit of nutrition knowledge mixed with personal insights (subscribe in next tweet!🤓)
The @HFXMooseheads season is beginning this Friday! In case you missed it last year, check out my article Mustard for Muscle Cramps?

It’s so tiring knowing that this is the type of crap people are hearing about nutrition.
It throws evidence out the window. It just creates unnecessary confusion.
Oatmeal can 100% be part of a healthy diet. Have some alongside your morning eggs and top with berries 👨🍳 🍓🫐
Trying something new on the Habitrition website. I've added a recipes tab and here's the first one!
Don't worry, all the recipes on my site will be very easy and pretty quick to throw together. Trust me, I'm not a chef!

Fasting is not ideal for longevity. Even Peter Attia has switched his views on this.
Building & maintaining muscle mass has taken its place; which I love to see.
Fasting can work for some goals for some people, no doubt. But it is not optimal for maintaining muscle mass.
Like today, my lunch was reheated rotisserie chicken, a cheese string, and trial mix. If I had kiwi on me I’d have one of those too!
Not every meal has to be Instagram worthy. Keep it simple, keep it sustainable folks!
