With these words captured on tape, Gabonese president Brice Oligui Nguema unwittingly confirmed what many already knew about Gabon’s August 2023 coup - it was neither ideologically driven nor was it motivated by any intention of effecting some kind of significant change in Gabon’s political status quo.

Recorded clandestinely by former Gabonese president Ali Bongo’s eldest son Noureddin Bongo after his May 2025 release from a 20-month spell in detention following his father's ouster, this video provides a rare direct look into the inner workings of French imperialism in Africa.

During the parley with the younger Bongo and his French mother Sylvia Bongo, Brice Nguema confirmed that the August 2025 coup was staged in close coordination with French president Emmanuel Macron, whom he apparently assured that longtime French puppet Bongo and his family were being treated well. Appealing to Noureddin Bongo to shelve any plan for revenge, he described the August 2025 coup as a “family affair” which was necessary to ensure that “another” officer did not carry out a coup and cause a “catastrophe.”

The “catastrophe” in question was a revolutionary coup by soldiers with nationalist, Pan-African, or anti-imperialist ideologies, such as in Burkina Faso in 2022 and Niger in 2023. Such a sequence of events would have doomed Gabon's Bongo family dynasty, which includes Nguema - himself a cousin of Ali Bongo. More importantly, it would have hastened the demise of France's brutal imperial enterprise once built on the back of 14 pseudo-independent African nations.

This serves as an important reminder that as Africans seek a change in the continent's neocolonial status quo, the motivations and entanglement of any actors who rise up to seize power must be carefully assessed. For every Ibrahim Traoré, there is a Brice Nguema, and for every Assimi Goita, there is a Mamady Dombouya.
