We’re leaving no stone unturned in our work to deliver more homes for people, faster. 🏡
In January, we commissioned a report to work with all partners on updates to the Building Code with Single Egress Stairs.
Today, I released that report:

We have liftoff. Multiplex zoning went into effect in Vancouver on October 17. And last week the first multiplex project got its approval to get built. It took 5 months to get the permit.
Another important step - finding ways to build differently. ✅
The province will lead a discussion over the next year to update the BC Building Code to explore enabling single egress stairs, that will allow some buildings to be built more efficiently.

Great look at obstacles to building missing middle housing! And examples where things worked and where they did not. As to the examples that worked, I'd add a local one: Kelowna's missing middle initiative from 2016 was extremely successful.
If you haven't yet, please take a few minutes to write in your support for @christineeboyle's motion to unlock Shaughnessy for more housing! It's up on Wed, so LAST CALL. https://t.co/TCe01kC2cM
Shaughnessy is the epitome of "exclusive playground for the richest."
That's a whole other conversation, though, whereas the central issue is:
Prefab can save a month or two on a city house, but fixing the zoning so the process has fewer hoops can save more than a year.
It's no contest.
Zoning Reform > Construction Reform
Hey politicians pushing ‘prefab’ as a way to help the housing crisis…
that’s great! but how ‘bout looking at your zoning first?
Simple, predictable zoning can deliver 10x the cost and time savings of prefab.
(Says the guy who literally has prefab in his twitter name)
Let's set a bold vision for the #broadwayplan: take on the childcare crisis head on, provide 100% of the demand that is projected, and plan for a new elementary school within the Broadway Plan boundaries.
While many aspects of the #broadwayplan are laudable, and staff have done a great job providing details on the housing component, the same level of detailed investigation is missing from two essential Sections: 16 (Community Well-Being) and 21 (Public Benefits Strategy)
There are great ideas in Sections 16 and 21 of the #broadwayplan, but the wording needs amending to ensure the results that citizens need. Instead of terms like "support, explore, and encourage", use language such as "require, provide, and ensure".
