@ZaidJilani Israel does not allow for a free press in the occupied territories. You continue to only view Israel with regards to how it treats those in its border.
@BenteScheller@WaelAlzayat Not sure what that even means. If his intention is to keep sanctions in the face of criticism, then it is his job to differentiate between targeted sanctions and those that can be lifted to assist with aid. Or he risks they all are lifted. Sounds like it’s at least his interest.
@WaelAlzayat@BenteScheller And for the record, the Cesar Act doesn’t just prevent American entities from assisting with reconstruction. It sanctions any and all global entities. I suspect you know that.
@WaelAlzayat@BenteScheller Do you honestly think sanctions banks and financial transactions dont have an affect on the currency? Which then contributes to the humanitarian disaster… you’re in a bubble my friend.
@WaelAlzayat@BenteScheller That’s simply not true. Ask the Norwegian Refugee Council when the regime allowed them to deliver cross line aid but they didnt out of fear of being in violation of sanctions for using a sanctioned airliner to deliver aid. Or ask anyone who tries to execute a gofundme drive.
@BenteScheller@WaelAlzayat He wrote an entire WP article in which he at no point suggested we should life non-targeted sanctions. He had the opportunity to “ specify” and chose not to. He and other syrian opposition supporters are eager to keep pressure on the regime at any price.
@WaelAlzayat The Council’s official position is zero reconstruction until Assad fully complies with resolution 2254. Which, while understandable, is never going to happen. They lobby the Hill the second there is ralk of reconstruction Aid of any kind
@WaelAlzayat Great. Now sell that to the Syrian American Council and the other groups you’re associated with. They push for devastating sanctions in the name of regime change, and at the cost of Syrian civilians— all while they live comfortably in the US.
@NatashaHallDC@WaelAlzayat If you need a sanctions waiver to facilitate aid to Syria then the sanctions must have served as an obstacle to the delivery of aid…
