#TodayInHistory
On this day in 1972, dictator Ferdinand Marcos signed Proclamation No. 1081, which placed the Philippines under martial law.
The military rule resulted in the dissolution of Congress, the suspension of civil liberties, and widespread human rights violations.
According to Amnesty International, 70,000 people were arrested, mostly arbitrarily, without warrants of arrest; 34,000 people were tortured; and 3,240 others were killed by the military and police during the regime. #NeverAgain #NeverForget
