I admire the underlying values that guided Cornelius in his decision making here: Ubuntu - empathy for another, still strong in village communities untainted by individualistic modern way of life. Elsewhere kid will pull out a phone, capture the scene and witness babies drowning.
Reporter: Didn’t you have concern about your personal safety as you attempted to save the babies?
Cornelius: Well, my thought was, I would rather drown with them. I felt sorry for them drowning, their legs kicking out in the water.
A 16-year-old boy has been commended for his swift actions after rescuing twin babies who were thrown into a pond by their mother in Omutundungu village, located in the Omusati Region.
Cornelius Shimwaafeni, a learner at Nicodemus Primary School, was herding livestock near the pond when he witnessed the incident.
Shimwaafeni said he could not stand by and watch the 9-month-old twins drown.
He narrated that he rushed to the pond and pulled both children from the water, and administered CPR before rushing them to the elders at nearby cuca shops for help.
Shimwaafeni’s actions have garnered admiration from both family and community members, with many hailing him as a hero for intervening to save the lives of the twins.
The twins have been discharged from the hospital and are now in the care of their 47-year-old father, while their mother remains in custody facing two counts of attempted murder.
Shimwaafeni expressed his eagerness to recount his heroic actions when school resumes, and his classmates inquire about their holiday experiences.

The government officially inaugurated a new computer laboratory in Uis, Erongo Region, to bridge the digital divide and expand access to quality education.
Education Minister Sanet Steenkamp says the facility marks a crucial step in ensuring that no Namibian child is left behind in an increasingly digital world.
The lab, established at Petrus !Ganeb Secondary School was made possible through a donation by the Swakop Uranium Foundation, which provides 20 computers, a printer and network equipment valued at N$347,000.
Steenkamp highlighted that access to digital tools is no longer a luxury but a necessity, particularly for learners in rural and underserved communities.
She said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader push to modernise education and strengthen digital learning across the country.

Using the PEST (Political, Economic, Social, Technological) framework, fair to conclude that industries to suffer the #StraitofHormuz standoff are tourism due to high costs of international travel. Consumer markets to suffer from high commodity prices and inflation. Who wins?
Water is reaching Sossusvlei. 🌊 Warden Erastus confirms the pan is currently unreachable — the river has cut off access and it won't be passable for hours. A rare and extraordinary sight in the Namib. 09.04.2026 #Sossusvlei#Namibia
The University of South Africa has become the first university in Africa to own an airport.
The facility will serve as a hub for training in aviation, drones, and digital systems.
In 2018, Stanford professor Matt Abrahams gave a masterclass on why most people fail to communicate well.
He broke down:
- The structure every message needs
- Why audiences stop listening
- The psychology of attention

A large convoy transporting a refurbished high-voltage power transformer intended for NamPower's Gerus Substation near Otjiwarongo has arrived at Kapps Farm, to the east of Windhoek.
The 100-metre-long combination, made up of multiple trucks, is scheduled to resume its journey tomorrow at around 09h00.
The convoy will travel along the Hage Geingob Freeway heading towards Windhoek before merging onto the Nelson Mandela Highway and continuing on to the Van Eck Power Station.
The transformer will remain stationed there over the weekend before continuing north to the Gerus Substation on Monday.
The cargo came from Eskom Rotek Industries in South Africa, where the transformer was repaired and upgraded.
The equipment was taken to South Africa in 2019 to be repaired and is now back in Namibia seven years later.
The convoy travels at about 25 kilometres per hour and covers around 80 kilometres each day due to its heaviness.
The public is invited to join the convoy alongside the road.

But neither party ‘has much appetite for the risks of social changes; each helps to make the world safe for the other. New Left Review, Jan/Feb 1985, https://t.co/RRpFy19TTg
The Democrats, with an electoral base largely comprising workers and national minorities, but dominated by a fraction of the capitalist class, may advance social programmes more advantageous to the oppressed than those of the Republicans.
Development is essentially the increasing capacity to regulate one’s (or a country’s) relationship with both internal and external forces or entities ~ paraphrased from Walter Rodney
@TheNamibian Worst ever? If I’m reading this graph correctly, the perception was at about 48 in 2012 (the previous lowest measured rate). The headline is misleading, but I guess effective. I clicked on it…
@FT A reality check: LLMs aren't even real AI, let alone AGI, nor will they be. They're just pattern seeking algorithms matching inputs to outputs at increasingly expensive scale with inherent hallucinations and errors that must be fixed. Human minds do more than pattern recognition.
