Africa’s democratic story is not only about challenges, it is also about important breakthroughs.
During #AfricaRegionalMonth2026, we are sharing examples from @Int_IDEA's Global State of Democracy 2025 report that illustrate how democratic institutions continue to evolve across the continent.
In South Africa, the 2024 national elections marked a historic political shift, with the African National Congress losing its absolute majority for the first time since 1994. The result led to the country’s first national coalition government, demonstrating how competitive elections can reshape political systems while remaining within democratic frameworks.
Moments like this reflect the strength of electoral systems that allow voters to influence political outcomes and hold long-standing governing parties accountable.
Throughout this month, we will continue sharing stories of both democratic resilience and reform across Africa.
I am profoundly grateful to God for the gift of life, another year of grace, and His unwavering faithfulness. I thank Him for His protection, guidance, and unconditional love through every joy and challenge, and I dedicate this new chapter to His glory.
When justice is out of reach for some, democracy is out of balance for all.
Today, we celebrate #WorldDayofSocialJustice, a day that calls attention to the urgent need for fairness, dignity, and equal opportunity in every society. This day reminds us that social justice is not an abstract ideal, it is the practical foundation that allows democratic values to be lived, not just promised.
Social justice ensures that people can participate fully in civic life, access their rights, and have a meaningful voice in shaping their communities. Without it, democratic systems struggle to deliver on their core purpose: representing and empowering all people.
As we celebrate this day, we also remember the importance of confronting inequality, expanding inclusion, and ensuring that those historically marginalized are not only heard but genuinely represented. When justice advances, democracy becomes stronger, more resilient, and more reflective of the people it serves.
Let’s continue building a world where justice and democracy move forward together.

A question that stayed with me after the youth policy dialogue:
How do we ensure inclusive participation that bridges rural and urban youth voices?
For agripreneurs and conservation youth, real change starts here.
Consultation is not enough. Co-creation must be the standard.
Human Rights Day:We reaffirm that 'human rights are essential to everyday life'. We stand in solidarity with victims of the worst forms of child labour and gender_based violence, championing dignity, safety, and equal opportunity for all.
#EndGBV#NoWorstChildLabour#HumanRights
#youthpolicydialogue2025, one message stood out: we must move from consultants to cocreators.
Grateful to @CVARwanda2016 and @SipetraStradh .
Quotes that guide me forward:
- “Democracy is lived through participation.”
Now is the time to act, innovate, and lead inclusively. 🌱
Rwandan youth weigh in on their role in governance at the Seventh Youth Policy Dialogue . The dialogue underscored that youth participation is not just a governance priority, but a human right. https://t.co/VkErbeNAX5 .@NEDemocracy@GloDemCoalition
As we approach the conclusion of the #KeepDemocracyAlive advocacy campaign, we reflect on the critical link between democracy and prosperity. Earlier this year, @ProSyn published an op-ed co-authored by @aminatatoureklk, High-Level Representative of the Senegalese President and member of the @ClubdeMadrid, and former Prime Minister of Senegal, and @KevinCasasZ, Secretary General of @Int_IDEA and former Vice-President of Costa Rica, entitled To Deliver Prosperity, We Must Defend Democracy.
The op-ed underscores that strong, inclusive, and accountable democratic systems are not a cost, they are a fundamental asset. Democracies drive innovation, attract investment, safeguard equality, and ensure that no part of society is left behind. As the global community faces complex challenges, including rising inequality and social unrest, these principles are more relevant than ever.
Through the #KeepDemocracyAlive campaign, we have highlighted that defending democracy is central to delivering prosperity, advancing development, and building societies where everyone has a fair chance. Now, as the campaign draws to a close, the message is clear: democracy is not just a political choice—it is the foundation for progress that benefits all.
