🚨Gary Neville on Luke Shaw and Manchester United’s first-half performance against Tottenham Hotspur:
🗣️ Gary Neville:
“First of all, Michael Carrick has got a hell of a lot of explaining to do. He kept players behind during the international break to work with them, prepare them and get his ideas across. And this is what we get?
From the first whistle, Tottenham were aggressive and ready to attack. Within the opening minute, they were already carving Manchester United open. They pressed, moved the ball quickly and exposed spaces that should never have been available.
United looked as though they’d only met each other five minutes before kick-off.
I’ve watched Manchester United for 35 years, and this first half is right up there with the worst I’ve seen. No control, no structure, no urgency and absolutely no evidence of a team that understands what it’s trying to do.
And then we have Luke Shaw.
Honestly, it’s painful watching him struggle like this in a Manchester United shirt. Tyrique George gave him a torrid time against Chelsea, and today he’s struggling to cope with Mohammed Kudus. Every time Tottenham attack that side, you feel something dangerous could happen.
Shaw is experienced, but experience means very little if you’re consistently being beaten one-on-one and leaving your teammates exposed.
If Sir Alex Ferguson is sitting in that stand watching this, I can only imagine what he’s thinking. This club was built on intensity, aggression and fighting for every ball. Yet United can’t string passes together while Tottenham look comfortable taking the game to them.
Where is the game plan? Where is the midfield protection?
Tottenham are pressing United into mistakes, and United cannot find a way out. The midfield looks leggy, the passing is poor, and nobody seems capable of taking control.
This is where Carrick needs to make serious decisions. If Carlos Baleba can bring more energy, strength and ball-carrying ability into that midfield, then Carrick needs to consider how to get the balance right. You cannot keep watching the same problems unfold and expect a different result.
And then you have Matheus Cunha gesturing towards the supporters, seemingly telling them not to boo the team.
I understand that players don’t want to hear their own fans booing them. But what exactly are the supporters supposed to applaud? They’ve paid their money and watched their team look completely outmatched.
The fans aren’t demanding perfection every week. They’re demanding effort, organisation, commitment and a team that understands the badge it is wearing.
You can lose football matches, but when you look this disorganised, lose individual battles and your opponents appear to want it more, the criticism is inevitable.
I don’t want to hear that these players need more time without seeing signs of improvement. Time is important, but there must be a clear direction. What exactly are we building here? Because in this first half, I haven’t seen an identity.
Carrick has to take responsibility, but the players cannot hide behind the manager. If you’re wearing that Manchester United shirt, you have a responsibility to compete. If you can’t handle the pressure of playing for this club, we have to ask serious questions.
Cunha can tell the supporters not to boo, but the best response is to give them something worth cheering.
Are the supporters supposed to pretend this is acceptable? Because if this is the standard Manchester United are setting for themselves, we’ve got a much bigger problem than one bad first half!”
