These insinuations that the South, or early America generally, was somehow anything other than a society by white people for white people are intellectually dishonest, and just obviously incorrect to any one with a working knowledge of history. Iโm not playing this game. The fact that my ancestors occasionally took pity on blacks, or occasionally cooperated with jews when the situation called for it, does not mean that they inhabited or desired to build some color blind society. Nor does it mean they saw these people as remotely equal or trustworthy respectively.
